I enjoyed the narrative and I thought that the author did a good job of collecting facts and weaving them into a story. The writing was good and made for easy reading.The weakness of the book was that it was presented completely from a European perspective and mind set. The author seemingly had no insight into the eastern culture. For example, his description of the interplay between the women was colorless and showed no understanding of the dynamic.I still recommend that anyone with an interest in history should read this book. It describes many events that have not been treated in one volume. It is interesting and absorbing.

This brief, but very informative book tells us how he got the title of "Magnificent" after all.Story of Suleiman the Magnificent goes along with other two great leaders' examples both in the West and the East, Alexander the Great and Sejong the Great, respectively. Their predecessors created the stable base for them to rule courageously breaking old, unreasonable customs without much of challenge from the traditional, noble aristocrats.Unfortunately all three monarchs’ great reigns of stability and prosperity were undermined by their successors or sons feuding with each other, not over the actual work and glory for their countries and the people, but for their personal desire towards the empty title, wealth, authority in decision-making process and overall power.Over all, it is fairly a non-biased account of the man written in simple-plain English with easiness for anyone to flip through all the pages in a couple of hours.
One of the well written short biographies in the series. Covering the major elements of Suleiman’s life, you will get a taste of 16th Century Ottoman exploits, politics and the person of Suleiman. An easy, quick and entertaining read.
Suleiman the Magnificent provides rich material for much more detailed biographies (I have read a few such). But for those with limited time for reading, this text provides an excellent summary of the highlights of his life and reign. HIghly recommended.
The mid 1500's were an Interesting time for the Ottoman empire. Suleiman the magnificent played a major role in the conquest of most of the eastern Mediterranean. The book gives some interesting insight into the thinking at the time.
